TRADE & INVESTMENT
Attracting outside investment to a community is the time-honoured
approach favoured by most cities and provinces over the years.
Attraction strategies often focus on promotion (brochures, advertising,
trade shows), infrastructure (industrial parks, municipal services),
fiscal incentives (tax breaks, loans, grants) and regulatory
issues (zoning, environmental regulations).
Exports are the only source of new wealth creation, whether
the product or service brings money in from outside the region,
the province or the country. And, as community economic development
has promoted for years, a community or region must develop its
strategic plan from the bottom up, based on an understanding
of community values and vision for the future, assessing local
strengths and weaknesses and external opportunities and threats
and using all the tools in your tool kit.
If a community takes this strategic approach to development,
business attraction and investment can target linkages from
the region to outside firms, markets and partners. “Think
global, act local” is where you start, but you soon need
to be acting globally also!

Saskatchewan
Trade and Export Partnership (STEP) http://www.sasktrade.sk.ca/
STEP is a unique public-private partnership led by industry
and established as a non-profit corporation in 1996 by the Province
of Saskatchewan. STEP works in partnership with Saskatchewan
businesses to maximize commercial success in global ventures.
STEP's team of professionals delivers custom export solutions
and market intelligence to member companies across the Province.

This website contains information on the department, information
for Canadian travellers abroad, links to exporting services
for business and recent news and information on Canada’s
role in the world as well as global issues. InfoExport

Info Export is the main website of the Department of Foreign
Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT) Trade Commissioner
Service. The site has information on services for both Canadian
Companies and Non-Canadian Companies. Highlights of the services
for Canadian Companies include links to Market Reports, DFAIT
offices in Canada and DFAIT offices abroad. It is also the login
and sign up location for the Virtual Trade Commissioner Service.
Trade Team Saskatchewan

Trade Team Saskatchewan is a partnership of key Saskatchewan
public and private sector organizations offering international
business services to active and potential exporters to help
them achieve success in global markets. There are six key areas
of focus: general information, skills development, exporter
counselling, market entry support, trade financing and in-market

data to help foreign businesses expand their business operations

This site contains information on the Community Investment
Support Program. The Community Investment Support Program
(CISP) was launched in 1998 to help Canadian communities attract,
retain and expand foreign direct investment. CISP supports
non-profit and public-private partnerships at the local community
level.
ExportSource

ExportSource is an online guide for Canadian Companies
exporting for the first time and established exporters. The
site contains a number of sources of information including
getting started, developing your export plan, identifying
your market and regional export information. The site also
contains key resources, hot topics and an article of the week.
Export Development Canada (EDC)

EDC is a Crown Corporation that provides financing and risk
management services to Canadian exporters and investors in
up to 200 markets worldwide. In 2005 EDC‘s services
and deal structuring capabilities helped to facilitate $57.5
billion in transactions for nearly 7,000 Canadian companies.
Approximately 90 per cent of EDC’s customers are small
and medium-sized businesses. Canadian companies utilize EDC
services in virtually every world market, however those services
can be particularly effective in facilitating trade and investment
in emerging markets that are opportunity rich but can also
pose increased levels of risk.

Strategis is a site produced by Industry Canada to serve Canadian
businesses and consumers. The site covers a number of subjects
including company directories, economic analysis and statistics,
and consumer information. It also has links to Strategis Guides
and Industry Canada Services.
Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC)

The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) is a financial
institution wholly owned by the government of Canada. BDC
plays a leadership role in delivering financial, investment
and consulting services to Canadian small businesses, with
a particular focus on the technology and export sectors of
the economy. The site provides information on a number of
topics including starting a business, acquisition, financing
